Occupational Licenses in Pennsylvania
and Criminal Convictions
Other Professions and Occupations in Pennsylvania requiring a license that can be impacted by a criminal or DUI conviction are: Barbers, Cosmetologists, Massage Therapists, Physical/Speech/Occupational Therapists, and Funeral Directors.
These occupations and professions require education, skill, training, and can create enjoyable and lucrative careers. The hard work, sacrifice, and dedication needed to obtain the license and have a career one can count on are not things worth risking over a foolish mistake, such as a DUI conviction.
The impact and regulations regarding criminal convictions are quite similar among these occupations and professions. Most state the requirement of “Good Moral Character,” No “Crimes of Moral Turpitude,” No Convictions under the Controlled Substances Act for selling illegal drugs, and no Alcohol or Drug Abuse.
Some of the occupations and Professions may fall into the category of being Mandatory Reporters.

General Guidelines for All Licenses
Criminal Convictions
The Act requires those licensed to be of “good moral character,” translating to no convictions for any crimes of “Moral Turpitude,” such as Murder, Arson, Kidnapping, Burglary, or Rape, and will undoubtedly prevent you from obtaining or result in a loss of your Professional or Occupational License. As will any conviction for all levels of sexual offenses and offenses involving harm to children. Crimes of theft and DUI can also result in a license denial or suspension. These crimes call into question a person’s morals, ethics, character, and judgment. For most the law explicitly states, an applicant cannot have been convicted of a felony under The Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act or of an offense under the laws of another jurisdiction which, if committed in this Commonwealth, would be a felony under The Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act unless.
Alcohol and Substance Abuse
If accused or suspected of substance or alcohol abuse, jobs and licenses are in jeopardy. Substance and alcohol abuse issues are extremely concerning to the Pennsylvania State Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs for apparent reasons. If abuse is suspected, you can face an investigation and hearing before the Pennsylvania State Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs. The investigation can result in a requirement that you attend and complete drug and alcohol counseling, submitting to random drug screens, and having your position or license placed on probation, restrictions, or terminated and suspended.
Mandatory Reporter
For licensed Speech and Audiology, Physical, Occupational, and Massage Therapists depending on the situation, you may be considered a MANDATORY REPORTER in Pennsylvania regarding suspected child abuse. If you fail to uphold the duties and requirements of a MANDATORY REPORTER, you will face criminal charges and consequences, as well as the loss of your job and medical license.
